The positioning of the proposed building plan on the site was derived from the fundamental function of the facility. The building design offers a straightforward approach in the assembly of various elements and functions permitting integration of the existing building. The building consists of three components being transformer housing, an existing switch room and a new extension to the switch room. It was constructed of materials that are robust and durable for longevity and ease of maintenance.
The visual amenity was enhanced by careful management of building scale, landscape treatments and material selection. The extension to the west has been designed as a flat roof to reduce the height relevant to the existing building and the roof to the transformer housing is curved to minimise the apparent height and is below the highest point on the existing building. The building form, mass and scale is mitigated by recessing the floor plate below ground level, curving the roof and walls from east to west which evokes reference to traffic flows.
